The climate is temperate in most of the United States. Normally, it gets hotter the further south you travel and seasonally more extreme the further you are north and inland from the coastlines. Winters in the northeast and upper Midwest can result in long periods of below freezing temperatures even though it is still warm enough to swim at the beaches in Florida and southern California.

Inauguration Day occurs on 20 January of each 4th year starting from 1965. It applies to the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland, Arlington and Fairfax Counties in Virginia, and the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia only and is moved to a Monday if it occurs on a Sunday.
