The dry winter months are from May all through to October and they are the most comfortable for traveling, but bear in mind you'll miss the green countryside that characterize the warmer and wetter summer season in the months of November to April. In winter, the evening temperatures can drop well below freezing; on the contrary, the days are paramount for wildlife viewing because the animals tend to assemble close to water holes. National parks are tremendously crowded during South African school holidays, so to avoid the flock, avoid mid-April to mid-May and mid-July to mid-September. There is a secondary rush around the Namibian school holidays in December and early January.
